1980’s court sneakers are all the rage. This style was really big way back in the infancy of MTV, the start of Hip-hop going mainstream, and the beginning of our culture’s obsession with high-end sneakers. Of course, Run-DMC made the Adidas Superstar infamous. These classic sneakers were part of Run-DMC’s signature style of cool.
While I truly love all the funky colored cross trainers and casual kicks that are available now, I always seem to go back to my court-style sneakers. For me, they never really went out style. I frequently wear my Puma Clydes, my beat up Adidas Stan Smiths (which have also made a huge comeback), my Tretorn Nylites, and my K-Swiss VN classics.
But guess it was inevitable in the cycle of fashion that white sneakers would make a comeback. I know that some fashion rules say that if you participated in a fashion trend the first time around, you’re too old, or supposed to skip it when it comes back in style, but I’m snubbing my nose at those rules.
I just bought a pair of Adidas Superstars! I had them back in the day and I’ve been seeing them around a lot in the last couple of months. I was obsessing over them for weeks and finally decided that age and rules be damned! Maybe it’s nostalgia. Maybe it’s a mid-life crisis. Maybe it’s my desire to try and be on trend. Whatever the reason, I had to have them.
Although Adidas now makes the Superstar in a variety of slightly updated styles with colored stripes and patterns (you can even design your own look), I went old school – white, hard shell toe, black stripes, gold insignia on the tongue. These sneakers are a classic that have actually been around since 1969. And you can’t go wrong with a classic.
